A bit of thought

Written by daniel fine

The opening mitzvah of the sedra is bikkurim, in which we bring our first fruits up to the beis hamikdash and at the same time read out our history about how HaShem took us out of Egypt and took us into Eretz Yisrael. There is an important message here to realise. We see the importance of thinking ‘where did this come from’ – whether it be the fruit themselves, or where did we come from to get to Eretz Yisrael. When we do that, we realise HaShem’s kindness because we take a minute to think and appreciate what He has and is doing for us. If we take a minute to look at the amazing wonders of nature, of the human body, or of the miraculous victories and achievements of the Jewish people throughout the ages (and nowadays), we appreciate the chesed of HaShem a bit better. Pharoah tried to take away all our time in slavery so that we could not think about things properly. Today we have things like ‘facebook’ to do that! Let’s take a bit of time out (it’s really ‘time in’) to focus on our roots and have a bit of a think. Amen.
