New – hot off the press!

Written by d fine

The pasuk (26;16) says ‘This day, HaShem your G-D is commanding you to perform these commandments…’ Rashi comments on the use of the word ‘this day’ to be giving the message that each day it should be for us as if the mitzvahs were given today – they should be new to us. This means that we should strive to have the excitement each time we perform a mitzvah as if it is a new thing that we have just been commanded to do. This is not easy, and it is one’s nature to have ups and downs spiritually, where we feel very close to HaShem and He is helping us for one period, and then at other times in life we feel somewhat distanced from Him (R’ Yonnasan Eibshitz says this). Our challenge is to generate the enthusiasm for mitzvahs even during the hard times.
