Hashem threatened to wipe out Klal Yisrael when Korach led his rebellion, but Moshe and Aharon implored Him for mercy, using the term: “G‑D of the spirits of all flesh…” (Bamidbar 16:22). Why did they specifically address Hashem in this unusual way? After all, we only find this term used one other time in Tanach.
The Ohr HaChayim (ibid) explains that there are three groups from whom Hashem desires praise. Hashem first desires the praise of the angels. Even more so, He desires the praise of the souls of the tzadikim in Gan Eden. Yet, He values the praises of Bnei Yisrael in this world most of all, since we praise Him even when He is hidden.
Unlike the other two groups, we live in a world of hester panim—a reality in which Hashem’s direct involvement is concealed. When we ‘uncover the mask’ and recognize Hashem’s constant guiding hand, that praise is worth the most to Him.
That is why Moshe and Aharon used this particular title—”G‑D of the spirits of all flesh.” They were emphasizing how Hashem cherishes the praises of “flesh and blood” the most. It would bring Hashem greater glory in this world to allow the Jewish People to live. This teaching is deeply inspiring. It reminds us how much Hashem values our praise—especially in a world where He may feel hidden.
When we internalize that everything is truly for our best and still manage to sincerely praise Hashem, it is unfathomable how much Hashem cherishes it.
A man once came to the Ba’al HaTanya, overwhelmed by the challenges he was experiencing. The tzadik comforted him with the following words:“I want you to know that the malachim would do anything to come down to this world and have the privilege to recite Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh each day.
They know how much our praises in this world are desired by Hashem, and they yearn to be able to praise Him down here, experiencing the same hester panim as everyone else!
Even singing one praise to Hashem in this world is worth more than everything.
My dear friend, you have this golden opportunity right now!
You can praise Hashem despite the challenges you’re going through.
It is the opportunity of a lifetime. Please don’t waste it. Don’t sell it for anything!”
