Conveying a negative message – Beyond Lashan Hora

Written by Anonymous

We are all probably familiar with the concept of lashan hara and the importance of proper speech. What however often gets over looked is the idea that one can do this sin without ever opening his mouth. The Chofetz Chaim talks about conveying a negative message through any method of expression, this includes body language. When are engaged in conversation with people, when we are in the public view or with friends, we must learn not only to guard our tongues, but also ensure our bodies do not give off a negative message. In order to prevent speaking negatively against a fellow man one should study the laws of the Lashan Hora.

In order to prevent expressing negative thoughts through bodily expression, treat your body as Hashem commands you. Your body is a tool, one which can be used to observe the laws of modesty, kashrut. It can be used in davening when praying with all your body. In this generation we communicate to one another through our bodies –

DONT let yours give off the wrong message.
