Heard a short vort from Chazan Yossi Muller of Whitefield Shul (Manchester, UK) that the role of a Jew is distinguished and separate from that of the non-Jewish nations. As such various halochos require a Jew to act and look differently than the gentiles. If we do this in the appropriate manner we are being mekadesh.
When kiddushin (marriage) takes place, a man singles out a woman and takes her for himself – so too we should go towards HaShem and single ourselves out – this is Kiddush.
However, if we do not single ourselves out for the purpose of coming closer to HaShem – Havdolla is made for us – ie. we are forcefully separated from others. Whether it’s antisemitism / holocausts / ghettos etc. –
HaShem wants the Jewish people to be a GOY KODOSH (a Holy Nation) this means being separate from all others…
Pleae G’d we will all come to see the difference between the Jewish people and the non Jewish people and have the strength to make kiddush ourselves, and not have havdolla made for us!
