Torah Portion - Bereishis
Written by Rabbi Andrew Savage

This week we read about the argument between Kain (Cain) and Hevel (Abel) which results in the first murder in history when Kain kills Hevel. The narrative which describes the cause of their argument raises some fundamental questions, and offers us an invaluable insight into the correct understanding of our relationship to Mitzvot generally. The Torah explains (chapter 4, verses 3 – 5) that both Kain and Hevel brought offerings, or gifts, to G-d. Kain, a farmer, brought an offering from his fruits. Hevel, a shepherd, gave from his sheep. Ostensibly then, both did an almost identical thing – they offered some of their produce, be it fruit or sheep, to G-d as a gift....

Torah Portion - Bereishis
Written by Rabbi Shimshon Silkin

B-reishis – Bet Reishit, 2 beginnings. Every beginning has a beginning that precedes it – indeed in our daily prayer we talk about G-d placing a soul “within me” – what is me? My existence before my existence – personality, life mission. Before we are ready to start out on a new path, open a new chapter, we need to open ourselves first – be there in our minds and commitment before we’ve begun the journey to that goal. And the most sure-fire way of guaranteeing our constant openness to new beginnings is to focus, daily, on our character development through the study of mussar and introspection. As the verse reminds us “Good is the end result from (because of) its

"Vay’gareish es ha’adam vayishkan mikedem l’Gan Eden es ha’Keruvim v’es lahat hacherev hamishapeches lishmor es derech eitz hachaim" (Bereishit 3:24)

After Adam and Chava sin by eating from the fruit of the tree of knowledge, Hashem exiles them from the garden of Eden and places Keruvim, wielding fiery swords, at the gate to insure that no human ever attempts a forbidden return. Rashi comments that these Keruvim were angels of destruction. Rav Yechiel Michel Epstein, author of Aruch HaShulchan, notes that this would appear to contradict a later comment of

Dovid HaMelech writes in Tehillim (119:160) rosh d’var’cha emes – Your very first utterance is truth. The Baal HaTurim points out that the final letters of the first three words in the Torah spell the word emes – truth – hinting to the fundamental importance of the value of truth in Hashem’s eyes. Indeed, the Gemora in Yoma (69b) states that Hashem’s “seal” is emes. Further, the final letters of the last verse describing the creation (2:3) also spell the word emes, alluding to the fact that the universe was created with Hashem’s attribute of truth from beginning to end. Rabbeinu Bechaye points out that the first verse in the Torah contains every vowel sound except for one...

By The Light of The Moon PDF Print E-mail
Torah Portion - Bereishis
Written by Moshe

“And God made the two great luminaries: the great luminary to rule the day and the small luminary to rule the night” (Bereishit 1:16). “Rabbi Shimon ben Pazi raised an apparent contradiction: the above verse first states “and God made the two great luminaries”, and the verse then states “the great luminary” and “the small luminary”?! The Moon said to God: “Master of the Universe, is it possible for two rulers to share one crown?” God said to the Moon: “Go and shrink yourself …” (Gemara Chulin 60b).

Rabbi Betzalel HaKohen MiVilna asks: Why did Rabbi Shimon ben Pazi insist on his interpretation that originally the Sun and Moon were both great luminaries but because the Moon complained it became a small luminary? Couldn’t he simply read the verse as “And God made the two great luminaries: the greater luminary to rule the day and the smaller luminary to rule the night”, i.e. that the Sun was always greater than the Moon? Maybe the luminaries are initially both called “great luminaries” because they are both “great” relative to the other heavenly bodies?

I just want to repeat over a thought (it's actually much more than that) which the Beis Halevi says in Parshas Bereishis. It is really really worth looking up; it's in beis halevi al hatorah at the end of parshas bereishis and starts with the words 'iissa besukkah.' This is the gist of it… The Beis Halevi asks what exactly changed from prior to Adam's sin to after the sin? [That particular question is a massive one; see Ramchal's Derech HaShem chelek aleph perek 3 who explains that before the sin, death was not needed in the world, since the soul could purify and uplift the body. But after the sin, the soul could not do this any longer and thus HaShem had to
