Introduction to לרעך

The 10th Teves saw Nevuchadnetzar, King of Bavel, lay siege to Jerusalem, a first step towards the eventual destruction of the 1st Beis HaMikdash. The gemara[1] explains that the root cause of the destruction was that the brachos that one is obligated to say before learning Torah, birkas haTorah, were not said. Rav Zvi Yehuda Kook[2] explained its meaning as follows: that ‘אשר בחר בנו’, the fact that the Torah had been given to all the Jewish people, rather than just a select few, had not been internalised. They were living their Torah lives as individuals, rather than as a community or as a nation. The Beis Hamikdash was destroyed and Eretz Yisroel was lost, since the connection to fellow Jews and thus to the Jewish Nation, was loose.

Today, the 10th Teves, is therefore a fitting day to launch לרעך, a monthly piece that focuses on the Halachos that govern the מצות בין אדם לחבירו. Its main goals are:

The Grass is Greener on the Other Side

ויכתב משה את מוצאיהם למסעיהם על פי ה' ואלה מסעיהם למוצאיהם (במדבר לג' ב')

The parsha summarizes the entire route followed by the Yiden from when they left Egypt until they were ready to enter Eretz Yisrael. The parsha begins, "Moshe wrote their going forth according to their journeys at the bidding of Hashem". At the end of the Possuk, this same idea is repeated, but the words are reversed: "andthese were their journeys according to their going forth". What was the reason for switching the order? The beginning of the Possuk expresses how Hashem regarded their travels; whenever Hashem wanted them to go forth He did so because he wanted them to progress to the next step in his plan, to journey toward the destiny that He had planned for them. Every place he ordered them to go was custom made, tailored just for them to help them towards their goal. Each place had its own obstacles to overcome, developing their character. However, the second phrase looks at the traveling from the people’s point of view. The people saw things differently. It is human nature for one to always think that he would be much happier and be more productive if only he were someplace else. They would always journey simply to go forth to the next destination hoping it would be better, hoping it would have more to offer, and not because they were thinking of reaching their long-term goal.[1] Many times one may think, “If only I was in a different school, if only I lived someplace else, if only I had more money… I would be so much more productive”. But the truth is that the exact situation that you are in was designed especially for you, to help you reach your goals and destinations. According to the Chofetz Chaim this principle is reflected in Hashem’s words to Moshe: The place on which you stand is holy ground.[2] Despite all its difficulties, your present situation is an opportunity for holiness and growth. The exact situation that you are in - righthere and right now, is holy, and that’s the place where you are able to grow and do better. You don’t need to go anywhere else.Furthermore, the grass only looks greener on the other side, because you are looking at it from a distance. You don’t see any of the blotches and cracks since the grass is covering them. All you see is beautiful green grass. However when you actually go there, you then see all the blemishes and all the breaks. It is not the same grass you saw from afar! Any school you attend or any place you live in has its own obstacles and its own difficulties to overcome.

What is Kavana? PDF Print E-mail

Rav Pinkus said something that was so simple but it changed my whole davening. He asked, “what is kavana? When someone is terribly sick and you daven for them, what are you saying? …Oy Hashem, he is so so sick, he’s in a terrible way, Please Hashem you have to save him?” By stating the situation is terrible is stating the obvious – Hashem knows the situation and it’s obvious that you want him to get better, so you are not achieving anything. This is not kavana.

Rather, kavana is something like this: “Hashem, You are so great. You are the healer of the sick and the carer of klal Yisroel. You love every Jew and

Chochma, Nevua, Torah and Hakadosh Baruch Hu all have their take on the above question of "choteh, mah onsho?"

Hashem says: Let him do Teshuva & be atoned
Torah says the sinner should bring an asham and be atoned
Nevua says, death pursues the sinner
Chochma says that negativity pursues the sinner

Tefilla: Concentration PDF Print E-mail

…Boruch attoh Hashem…I have to get my suit dry cleaned...Magen Avraham…

Stop it!...

Attoh gibur…I wonder what’s for dinner tonight…leolam Hashem… Concentrate on davening!

Sound familiar??

The Baal HaTanya (Chapter 28) writes that the source of our frustration should in fact be the source of our joy.  Rather than feeling downhearted about foreign thoughts entering our mind whilst we are immersed in tefilla, prayer, we should instead be inspired to attain new heights in our prayers.

This concept can be demonstrated in the example of two people are fighting.  When one person gains a stronger grip or asserts more pressure, his opponent must strengthen himself at that point too.  In the same way, we were created with a yetzer hatov, a good inclination and a yetzer hara, negative inclination.  They are in constant battle. The yetzer hatov is fighting to create its connection with Hashem and the yetzer hara’s goal is to destroy that relationship.  Therefore, the Bal HaTanya continues, when we are trying hard to create our connection with Hashem through our tefilla and we are prevented by foreign thoughts, this is just a sign that we are doing well with our efforts to get close to Hashem, for if it were not the case the yetzer hara would not need to strengthen himself to attack us at this point.  This attack should lead to an enhanced state of joy during our davening which will give us enough time and energy to ignore the foreign thoughts and continue with our prayers.

Inspirational Story!

During the Holocaust, a large group of Polish women were rounded up to be sent to the gas chambers. As the group gathered their possessions to take with them into the camp the evil Nazi officers called out to all the villagers who were standing by watching, “Anything that these Jews leave behind you may take for yourselves, because for sure they will not be coming back to collect them!” Two Polish women who were standing nearby saw a woman towards the back of the group, wearing a large, heavy, expensive coat. Not wanting to wait to see if others got the coat before them, they ran to the woman and knocked her to the ground, grabbing her coat and walked away. As the Jewish women were being led away, these two Polish women lay down the coat to divide the spoils of what was hiding inside. As they rummaged through the pockets, they discovered .... READ MORE

back painFor many years I suffered from excruciating back pain, rarely letting up for more than a half an hour of sitting still.  In truth, it was not so terrible, especially when I was on my feet, but let’s just say that it affected my life in a big way.  A few years ago I visited a back specialist who rigorously tested every muscle on my body and finally confirmed that my pain was being caused by a curved spine that was putting a lot of pressure on my lower back when I sit.  In fact, this diagnosis made an even greater impression on me since the long and scary name given for my ‘condition’ was...READ MORE
