Visiting the Shiva House of the late Rosh Yeshiva, HaRav Nosson Tzvi זצוקללה"ה
At the Shiva House of the venerable Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel זצו"ל, his illustrious brother, Rav Gedalya Finkel שליט"א told me that he saw in a sefer by Rav Yehonasan Eyebeschuetz that when a tzadik is nifter, all of his middos tovos become hefker, and anybody who wants is able to take them.
I asked what the best midda of the Rosh Yeshiva was, “Perhaps mesiras nefesh was the Rosh Yeshiva’s strongest midda?” I suggested, saying over what everyone had always said. Of course, no one can fault the Rosh Yeshiva’s mesiras nefesh, but his best midda was his ayin tova, said Rav Gedalya. He was able to see the best in people and he made everyone feel so good about themselves. “He only had good to say” added Rav Gedalya. The eyes of the Rosh Yeshiva saw something that others could

Cheshbon Hanefesh
Below are some of my notes on cheshbon hanefesh from shiurim I have heard by Rav Berkovits shilta. I found the shiurim very inspiring and practical and thought it may be worthwhile sharing. I hope you find this beneficial. (I apologise for any inaccuracies that may have crept in, and also for the brevity for some points.)
How to go about doing a cheshbon hanefesh - some guidelines:
1. Recognise how special you are (chelek Elokai mimal) - if you don't think so it’s your yeitza hora telling you that;

I wondered why Hashem had showed me this strikingly artistic apple and this might be why:
The other day, I saw a beautiful apple, one so lucious, that it literally looked like Hashem (the Painter) had used watercolor paints to impose the colors on the 'canvas': the apple itself.
I was highly reluctant to eat the apple, for I loved to stare at it and enjoy the artistic qualities that it has-but, is that the purpose of an apple, or any piece of food for that matter? If we think about the purpose of food, it is to provide nutrients and sustenance to those who eat it. What happens when a fruit or vegetable is left around, without serving its purpose? It begins to decay, to rot. We are all like this

Ever walk along the beach... Looking down the sand, the shells, the rocks. How has this rock become so smooth. A rock seems it would have rough edges so how did this happen. When water drips on a rock it effects it. When the rock is in the water, the water smooths out the rough edges. Same to us we can change just as the rock. However that doesn't happen over night. One drip at a time. One thing a day, a week.. Whatever each person can take upon themselves. The hard work pays off but its not something we see instant results in. When you get discouraged or feel like giving up think of the smooth rock you saw at the beach and remember its a process.
May we all be zoche to smooth out our "rough edges" and the "rough edges" of the world to bring moshiach beme'heyra veya'meynu amen

Ever heard the saying "life is a down escalator"? Probably not. Sounds pretty negative, I know. Well I try to live by this "quote" everyday. Life and our purpose in life is something we must strive for 24/7. For instance, when someone Is on a diet they are usually trying to lose or maintain weight. In Judaism maintaining doesn't exist. It doesn't exist in the sense that we must always try to move up. If we decide to stay where we are and not take the next step its just as walking AGAINST a down escalator. The minute you stop forcing yourself opposite the escalator you begin to fall low. So whatever you are working on, don't stop and say its enough. Its never enough, we must reach the top!

This is a quote from an article on chabad.org: '...One's head should always rule over one's heart (which is specifically why we were physically created this way).' We need to realize that while our heart, our feelings if you will, and our yetzer harah if you must, can be overided by our head and should be overided by it, just as the head is physically above one's heart, so to, it should rule over it.

When we go about our daily lives, we think that this is reality-the way we see things is the way it is.
Here's an experiment: take a spoon and put it into a cup of water. What happens? The spoon looks distorted, 'stretched' and maybe even 'bent'. Now, remove the spoon from the water-it still looks the same as it did originally, although it is wet.
Torah is compared to water. The spoon is us. When we get 'distorted' and 'bent' by being immersed in Torah, it's not that our real reality is getting distorted, but the Torah is restoring us to our original selves-before secular influence and averos(sins). And what happens when we leave the 'water'? We no longer look altered, as we did in the water, but we're still 'wet', just like the spoon. The Torah still had an effect
