When it comes from you it’s memorable

Written by Anonymous

The Torah tells us that HaShem made all the animals march past Adam and he had te insight and wisdom to give each one its name (eg parah for the cow). And he got all the names correct, ie he understood the essence of each animal and attached a name which would reflect this essence accordingly. The Chizkuni asks why did HaShem do this whole animal parade in front of Adam; why not just have HaShem tell Adam the names of the animals – why did Adam need to name them? The Chizkuni answers that since Adam himself named the animals he is more likely to remember those names. The idea is applicable in Torah learning – the stuff we remember is often the material that we have worked at ourselves the most/have our own chiddushim on, and have thus made it part of us.
