It has become a tradition that whenever we have some wine or other alcoholic beverage we always say the word “L’Chaim”.
I have one very quick question for you…. why???
I heard a beautiful explantaion that I want to share with you…
What happens when you put a NON Acholic beverage (i.e. coke, water etc) in the freezer?…. it freezes.
Now, what happens if I was to put an acholic berverage in the freezer?…. It DOES NOT freeze.
I hear you ask…this all sound very nice and scientic but how does this explain why we say “L’Chaim”.
The answer is that when we say “L’Chaim” we want our life to be like the alcahol. Just as the alchaol does not change to it surrounding (i.e. freeze) we don’t want to either. Hashem has put us into this world in order that we should turn everything L’shem shamayim (for the sake of heaven) (see chapter 2 of Tanya). The Holy Torah stops us becoming like the cola or the water, and helps us to be different from the other nations of the world. L’Chaim!!!
