until the feet leave the marketplace

Written by D Fine

There is a great chassidishe saying based on a gemarra shabbes relevant to chanuka. The gemarra asks how long should the chanuka candles burn for, and answers until the feet of people [‘haregel’] are no longer around in the marketplace. Now, this word ‘haregel’ (the foot) can also be read as hergel (habit). And so the chassidim say; how big an impact should the chanuka candles burn internally for; until habit is removed – ie until we stop performing our mitzvos out of habit and go back to the fire of emthusiasm and vitality of spirituality that we are.
